It's been an epic project to prepare my 200th Episode. I hope you enjoy it and the effort was worth it. Volume 1 will be released next Saturday while I'm off having fun in London.

Another film that's worth mentioning in the 'real-life superhero' genre is the 2006 film Special starring Michael Rapaport. This is another micro-budget film that follows a man as he has a bad reaction to some medication and becomes convinced that he's gained superpowers. The brilliant thing about the film is that throughout it's equally possible that he has gained powers. Another film that like Super fully examines the psychological aspects of superheroism.

Episode #197 Shownotes

I probably gave Torchwood a bit of short shrift in this episode, but honestly I didn't really have much to say. I was pretty disappointed. I think this proves that Children of Earth worked so well because it was unusual. Trying to repeat the same 'mini-series' approach didn't really work. Especially when you extend it to 10 episodes. One piece of credit I will give the series is the performance of Lauren Ambrose as evil PR woman Jilly Kitzinger. This was a thankless role and could have been nothing more than a moustache-twirling villain. The fact that Kitzinger was an intriguing character with considerably more nuance than you might expect was entirely down to the performance of Ambrose.

Drive was a great film that similarly to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy uses silence and visual cues rather than dialogue to tell it's story. My one line review of the film would be that if The American had been written and directed by The Coen Brothers, this is the film that would result. In case anyone still hasn't heard Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls here's the video. This version of the video has taken out all the clips from the crappy movie City of Angels, so it's a little disjointed. The song is still awesome.


Sometimes producing these video playlists produces some interesting juxtapositions. First up you have the in-your-face debauchery of The Objex's one-shot video immediately followed by the wholesome sexuality (if that's not too much of an oxymoron) of Kaile Goh's generic effort. Also in the list we have a decent live performance from Sounds of the Empire and a suitably atmospheric video from Vicky.
