Episode #165 Shownotes

For a non NFL fan it really is hard to describe just how much Michael Vick has turned his life around. If you'd told me he would turn into an accurate passer on a contending team two years ago I would have laughed in your face. At that point he was in jail and there was some debate as to whether he would ever get another job in the NFL due to the potential fan backlash. Now he's had one of the best Monday Night Football performances ever and is one of the most accurate passers in the league this year. He's also making frequent and public amends for his dog fighting past. It's kinda inspiring.

Only two videos this week but the Hollerado one is superb. It was shot in one take and supposedly they got it right on the 13th attempt.

As mentioned on the show, here's the video for 'Little Flame' by Elle S'Appelle. Sadly the band are no longer together, but this remains one of my all-time favourite music videos. I love the home-made simplicity and imagination on display. This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the video for 'Americanarama'.

Episode #164 Shownotes

The coverage of Prince William's engagement has been insane. Once told about it I don't need to be told anything more. I'd be interested to see how many people are genuinely interested in the story and how much of it is simply media hype.

If you really want to see the footage that is playing under the Sandra Bullock montage from The Blind Side I've found a YouTube clip. I warn you the quality is not high and it is a shocking injury.

Not a great selection of videos this week. One produced video and three live performances.

Episode #163 Shownotes

I'm not sure if my rant in this episode matters to everyone, or just those that use twitter. Whatever your initial thoughts on this court case it's a subject that should make everyone care. It is a fundamental question of freedom of speech. It is also a matter for realising that sometimes things are just a joke.

Combining two thoughts from separate sections of this podcast I'm sure that if my American listeners were so inclined they could find downloads for the 1st series of Misfits. Not that I'm advocating that of course...

Pitiful selection of videos this week. 1 live performance and 1 video that appears to have been put together from stock footage.

Episode #162 Shownotes

Recorded over the course of 2 days due to interruptions from bonfire night fireworksand an unexpected Chinese takeaway, the latest episode of the podcast is now released.

I spent a lot of time talking about John Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear in this episode. A phrase that kept coming to mind was 'The Silent Majority'. That is in itself a demonstration of the polarization in American politics. It was originally used by Right-Wing nutjobs in the US saying that their views were not being heard. Bollocks. The extremes of both wings have always been heard and I am reclaiming this phrase for those of us in the middle.

Here is a transcript of John Stewart's whole speech. It's a great piece of impassioned oratory. Written by a comedian. Also take some time to check out this list of the 100 greatest signs seen at the rally. Some very imaginative, funny words. Sprinkled with some seriousness.

I hate TV and film reviewers who just complain about how the book was better. I want to make absolutely clear that I object to the changes made to the characteristics of Aliena in Pillars of the Earth and Thorne in Sleepyhead because they were unnecessary. If changes had been made in the best interest of the story it would have been fine.

Not a great deal on the video front this week.
