Ourobouros Podcast Best Videos 2014

I give you my selection of the ten best videos for tracks that were played on the Ourobouros Podcast in 2014.

These videos are not in any 1-10 order, they are in the chronological order they were played on Ourobouros Podcast.

Here's some brief reasons why I selected these videos as my best of the year

'Ménage À Trois' by Join The Riot

From: Stockholm, Sweden
Director: Aksel Dalili
Appears On: Episode #292

I'm a sucker for a one-take video, and this one perfectly fits the song. It's about people on a night out in Stockholm, so the band goes around the late night streets of Stockholm picking up revellers as they go. I love the guerrilla style in which this was shot.

'The Virus In' by Broadwing

From: Alice Springs, Australia
Director: Ben Allen
Appears On: Episode #306

I'm also a sucker for animated videos, and this is a really good example. Exquisitely detailed pictures of Broadwing's face and other body parts get animated by the artist himself for a stunning visual experience.

'Howl At The Moon' by Early Morning Rebel

From: Los Angeles, California
Director: Dustin Bath
Appears On: Episode #307

VIDEO IS NSFW!

Many of these videos I have selected because they have a really good concept or the visuals really fit the song. This one I selected because it is an excellent piece of film making. It's portrayal of frustrated, directionless youth is powerful stuff.

'This Train Remains' by The Last September

From: Edinburgh, Scotland
Director: Ainslie Henderson
Appears On: Episode #309

Another thing that always impresses me is stop-motion animation using human beings. Artist and animator Ainslie Henderson explores memory and regret by animating himself as well as diaries and scrapbooks. This video has such a rapid pace to it that I feel I should give warnings about motion sickness and/or epilepsy, but it's an excellent piece of work

'When You Want Me' by Jingo

From: London, England
Director: Jack Hextall & Rick Sims
Appears On: Episode #309

Sometimes you see a video and your first thought is 'How on earth did they come up with that idea?' The central idea of this video is totally bizarre, but what makes this video even more impressive is that it doesn't stick rigidly to the potential of that central idea. There is more than one unexpected turn this video takes and it gets weirder than the initial weird concept might have you believe.

'Ill Gotten Gains' by They're Coming To Get You Barbara

From: Liverpool, England
Director: Christian Scott & David Kalver
Appears On: Episode #311

As you might expect from their name They're Coming To Get You Barbara have a love of all things zombie. So of course for their first video they stage a zombie apocalypse. This is a really well made video that impresses me with the amount of aerial shots they get on what must have been a very small budget.

'Matamoros' by The Afghan Whigs

From: Cincinnati, Ohio
Director: Philip Harder
Appears On: Episode #312

When compiling these end-of-year lists there are often videos or tracks that sneak up on you and you include in the final ten when you didn't necessarily expect them to make it. The shorter the list got I just couldn't take this one off the list. The exuberance of dancers performing in Manhattan subway carriages is infectious and the juxtaposition of hip-hop dancers performing to an alt-rock track really works.

'Your Heart Is A Weapon The Size Of Your Fist' by Lux Lisbon

From: Nottingham, England
Director: Chris Tongue
Appears On: Episode #312

This is one of those videos that is just an enormous amount of fun. It's a loving and well realised homage to '80s and '90s video games filmed during a zombie-themed LARPing event in an abandoned Reading shopping mall.

'Politricks' by Einar Stray Orchestra

From: Oslo, Norway
Director: Einar Stray
Appears On: Episode #314

An eerie and beautifully shot video exploring the dangers of religious fervour and peer pressure. As well as being a good singer Einar Stray is also a very talented film maker.

'Forever In Your Debt' by The Slow Readers Club

From: Manchester, England
Directors: Chris Croft
Appears On: Episode #319

A disturbing and very well directed video exploring sexual exploitation and cycles of abuse. The darkest side of humanity has never looked so beautiful.

As ever it was very difficult to whittle the list down to a final 10. Honourable mentions go to:

'Serotonin Sarah' by Emergency Door Release (RIP) Directed by James Taylor
'Lies' by The Evidence Directed by Douglas Thomson
'Hover' by King George Directed by Dillon Pearce
'A Stolen Heart In A Stolen Car' by Metropolis America Directed by Matej Valtr
'Feeling Good' by Vienna Ditto Directed by Bobby Bloomfield
