Ourobouros Podcast #300 - Vol. 5 The Videos

Find here selected 10 of my favourite videos that have featured on the Ourobouros Podcast since 2007.

'Vitriol' by Bluejuice

From: Sydney, Australia
Director: Samuel Bennetts
Appears On: Episode #82, Jan '09

A fabulously tongue-in-cheek video as Bluejuice act like a cult and perform in a Sydney shopping mall. The clash of mockumentary characters and bemused members of the public is very funny, including some unexpected audience participation towards the end (check out the look on the female dancer's face in the background).

'Not In A Million Lovers' by Beangrowers

From: St. Julian's, Malta
Director: Duncan Bone
Appears On: Episode #88, Feb '09

A technically masterful video in which singer Alison Galea works her way through several relationships. The medium we see these relationships through is 100s of photos, and by animating these photos together Galea lip-syncs the entire song.

'Cool In The Cool Way' by My First Earthquake

From: San Francisco, California
Director: Katie Gillum
Appears On: Episode #112, Aug '09

The subtitle of this video is 'Invasion of the Hipster Bodysnatchers' and for a band who came from San Francisco I suspect they were satirising attitudes they saw daily. Hipsters are ripe for mockery and this is a fun way of doing it as the band are pressured to conform.

'Americanarama' by Hollerado

From: Ottawa, Canada
Director: Greg Jardin
Appears On: Episode #165, Nov '10

Take some scaffolding and 24 well co-ordinated volunteers and you can make a giant animation platform. It's useless having a great concept like this without invention and director Greg Jardin comes up with some very interesting ideas.

'Polar Rapid' by 1995 (A.K.A. NO WHY)

From: Auckland, New Zealand
Director: Michael Humphrey
Appears On: Episode #176, Apr '11

A video of stark simplicity and eerie beauty as various people are seen in close-up as they react to an unseen and unknown video. We're not even sure they're all watching the same footage. It's somewhat disquieting to have no idea what they are seeing, but personally I find it fascinating.

'Can We Go Wrong' by Hesta Prynn

From: New York
Director: Randy Scott Slavin
Appears On: Episode #181, May '11

I'm a sucker for a stop-motion animated video using the medium of people and this is a really good example. Hesta Prynn takes a 'brownie' inspired animated trip around a New York park and also finds time to make reference to '80s games.

'14' by Carrousel

From: Tallahassee, Florida
Director: Steven Letizia
Appears On: Episode #221, Jun '12

Another video that is astonishingly impressive on a technical level. Carrousel split the screen and have the camera running forwards on one half and backwards on the other. The perfect co-ordination to make things cross over seamlessly is amazing and the video as a whole is a visual treat.

'What Are You Waiting For?' by Dikta

From: Garðabær, Iceland
Director: Helgi Jóhannsson
Appears On: Episode #234, Oct '12

Most of these videos have made the list because they are conceptually or technically interesting. This is included because it's an outstanding piece of film-making. Essentially this is a compelling short film about love and obsessive rivalry that just happens to also be a music video.

'Want It Back' by Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra

From: Boston, Massachusetts
Director: Jim Batt
Appears On: Episode #257, Jun '13

VIDEO IS NSFW!

The basic concept of this video is impressive enough, the lyrics of the song get animated across various things, but what takes this to the next level is what those lyrics get animated across. Primarily it's Amanda Palmer's naked body. Palmer has always been confrontational about her sexuality, but to base an entire video around it is something else.

'Serotonin Sarah' by Emergency Door Release

From: Newcastle, England
Director: James Taylor
Appears On: Episode #296, Jun '14

In an animated video you generally either get a good story or a good animation style. This is one of those rare animated videos that has both. Not only does it look really cool, it has a compelling plot. It's almost like Genndy 'Samurai Jack' Tartakovsky directing Tomb Raider.
